Discovery of our concept and idea

For this project my best friend and I decided to collaborate together, he's name is Omar he is studying Fashion Communication & Promotion at CSM as well

We both have a bit of the same culture, we are both Egyptians and spent all our childhood in Cairo until we moved to London for university. Also, I am half Syrian and he is half Lebanese, we both lived the Arab Spring, all these revolutions and chaotic moments.

Living in London is totally a new life, a different lifestyle, different culture and people. For me, I live two different lives when I am in London and Egypt. When I go back to my hometown there are so many things that I love and hate at the same time, I am attached to it for the people, the Egyptian himself and his richness of culture. However, sometimes I hate it so much for the lack of education, harassment of women in the streets and many other things that needs to be changed. Omar and I have a very bizarre relationship with our country, it is very contracting because we love it and hate it at the same time.

How can we show all of this in a film? especially that we are now in London and not in Cairo? We thought a lot because there is so much we want to say. After many talks and reflection, our idea came out by analysing one object : Tires.

the usefulness of the tires was also very contradictory, people used to burn tires during protests such as the Egyptian revolution in 2011 or even during the war in Syria and now in Lebanon, it will make the protests more powerful because the smoke of the tires are so difficult to stop.

On the other hand, in the streets of Cairo, I usually see painted tires in bright colours, often used as chairs for people to gather and drink tea together or even used as decoration.

The goal of our film was to bring the chaotic to something beautiful, to make things we hate to things we love, like the relationship we have with our country.

Cairo as Told by Youssef Chahine (Youssef Chahine, 1991)

By watching this shot documentary film.. as told by Youssef Chahine , it reminded me why I have this love and strong attachment to this country despite everything that Chahine describes in the film .

Produced in 1991, the 23-minute movie sheds light on the visionary’s home town and the problems that were faced by the Egyptians at the end of the 80s and beginning of the 90s. It discusses unemployment, extremism, poverty, pollution, and a myriad of other topics that remain relevant until today.

I also noticed by listening everything that he was saying that I shared the exact same opinion . I am very attached to my Egypt but I am also open to the universe.
